Hours risk and wage risk: repercussions over the life‐cycle

نویسندگان

چکیده

We decompose earnings risk into contributions from hours and wage shocks. To distinguish between shocks, modeled as innovations to the marginal disutility of work, labor supply reactions shocks we formulate a life-cycle model consumption supply. For estimation use data on married American men PSID. Permanent explain 31% total risk, permanent 21%. Progressive taxation attenuates cross-sectional but its insurance impact is much smaller. At mean, one standard deviation shock raises life-time income by 11%, 13%. This article protected copyright. All rights reserved.

Wage risk and employment risk over the life cycle

We define the distinction between productivity and employment risk and estimate the components of risk using wage and mobility data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. We then calibrate a model of intertemporal consumption and labor supply and study the effect of the two sources of risk on precautionary saving and labor supply. Finally, we measure the relative welfare costs of employment a...

Accounting for Idiosyncratic Wage Risk Over the Business Cycle∗

We demonstrate that wage volatility, measured as the cross-sectional variance of wage changes in PSID data, is counter-cyclical. We quantify this relationship by estimating the regression coefficient of wage volatility on the national unemployment rate in a multilevel Bayesian model, then decompose this coefficient into three main factors. During a recession, wage volatility increases substanti...

Sharing wage risk

Intro: risk sharing Our paper introduces three innovations with respect to the standard literature. First, labor supply is explicitly recognized and modeled as an endogenous variable, that responds to exogenous shocks. Actually, one of the main topic of the paper is precisely to investigate how adverse income shocks trigger changes in labor supply at the household, and possibly at the risk shar...

Unemployment risk and wage differentials

Workers in less-secure jobs are often paid less than identical-looking workers in more secure jobs. We show that this lack of compensating differentials for unemployment risk can arise in equilibrium when all workers are identical and firms differ only in job security (i.e. the probability that the worker is not sent into unemployment). In a setting where workers search for new positions both o...
